Today, we have two playoff games against the same team going head to head, obviously in different years. I’ll give some highlights of each game, and I’ll put a poll at the end. The poll will be open for about 24 hours, you guys get to vote, and the winner by popular vote will advance. Today, our tournament continues with our next playoff win match up: The 1974 NFC Championship versus the Los Angeles Rams matches up against the 1977 Divisional playoff, also against the Los Angeles Rams.1974 NFC Championship against the Rams: Once again, this was a classic ‘Purple People Eaters’ era win. Really strong defense Ben Gedeon Jersey , especially in the red zone, with the game flipping on a big turnover. The Vikes held on to a 7-3 lead when the Rams drove down to the Vikes goal line. But Wally Hilgenberg intercepted a tipped pass in the end zone, the Vikes took the ensuing drive the length of the field and scored a TD, and they held on for a 14-10 win. With the win, the Vikes advanced to the Super Bowl for the second straight year. The video clip is of the whole season, with the NFC Championship highlights about the last five minutes or so, if you’d like to fast forward.1977 Divisional Playoff, also against the Rams: So if you’ll notice, the Vikings and the Rams had a pretty intense rivalry in the 1970’s. They met in the playoffs in 1974, and then 1976-78. By 1976 the Rams were thought to be the better team, but the Vikings pulled out a big win and went to the Super Bowl.In 1977, though Jaleel Johnson Jersey , the Rams were expected to win, and by a fair amount. They finally got the Vikings at home, as opposed to traveling to frigid Met Stadium in winter, and they had a younger and better team. QB Fran Tarkenton had suffered a season ending injury a few weeks earlier against the Bengals, and was out for the year, and backup Bob Lee got the start. But fate intervened on the Vikings behalf, as torrential rains flooded the turf at the L.A. Coliseum, and the two teams played in 100 yards of slop. The game has gone down in NFL lore as ‘The Mud Bowl’, and when you see clips of football in the 1960’s and ‘70’s, this game always seems to make the highlight reel. The Vikings found a way to pull the upset, eking out a 14-7 on the legs of Chuck Foreman, who ran for 101 yards and a touchdown on 30 carries. This was the last playoff win of the Purple People Eaters era Pat Elflein Jersey , as they were pretty much dominated by the Cowboys in the NFC Championship the following week, and in 1978 struggled to an 8-7-1 record, with the Rams finally getting their revenge. For the last two weeks, the Minnesota Vikings held their own postseason destiny in their hands. In the regular season finale, they let it completely slip away.Courtesy of an offense that, once again, did next to nothing in the first half and a defense that couldn’t get a stop when they needed one, the Vikings fell to the Chicago Bears on Sunday afternoon at U.S. Bank Stadium by a final score of 24-10. Coupled with the Philadelphia Eagles defeating the Washington Redskins at FedEx Field, that means that the Vikings will not be participating in the NFL playoffs starting next week. The Vikings, once again, did nothing on offense early in this one, as they gained just 11 yards in the entire first quarter. Meanwhile Dalvin Cook Jersey , the Bears had put up two touchdowns by Jordan Howard to take a 13-0 lead early on, thanks to Cory Parkey missing an extra point. The Bears did get some points before the half, courtesy of a 45-yard field goal by Dan Bailey to make it 13-3 going into the locker room.Minnesota’s offense finally showed some signs of life in the third quarter, as they cut the deficit to 13-10 on a 2-yard touchdown pass from Kirk Cousins to Stefon Diggs. After that, however, the Bears put together a massive drive that took over nine minutes off the clock and ended with a 3-yard run by Tarik Cohen. With the Bears successfully completing a two-point conversion, the score was 21-10. The visitors added a 42-yard field goal by Parkey to make it 24-10 with just over four minutes left in the game. That’s how it ended, as the Minnesota Vikings capped what has to go down as one of the more disappointing seasons in recent history by squandering an opportunity to get into the playoffs in back-to-back years for the first time since 2008 and 2009.Kirk Cousins had a straight-up ugly football game, and I’m sure that’s the narrative that we’ll have to hear about all offseason. He completed 20-of-33 passes for just 132 yards, which is the lowest yardage total he’s ever had as a starting quarterback. Stefon Diggs led the way with seven catches for 43 yards and a touchdown, and Adam Thielen had three catches for 38 yards. The Vikings’ defense, which came into today’s game as the NFL’s best third-down defense Jalyn Holmes Jersey , allowed the Bears to convert 8-of-13 third down attempts, including several that came via penalties to extend drives.Minnesota finishes their season with a record of 8-7-1, and their season is over. Chicago lifts their record to 12-4, and will host Philadelphia at Soldier Field next weekend. The Minnesota Vikings take their opportunity to make it to the 2018 NFL playoffs and urinate it directly down their collective leg, falling to the Chicago Bears by a final score of 24-10 at U.S. Bank Stadium. Thank you to everybody that got their coverage of this week’s game, and of this entire season. . .disappointing though it was. . .right here at The Daily Norseman.
