Manchester United made a splash as the transfer window deadline closed in, signing Colombian striker Radamel Falcao to a season-long loan with the option to buy the player at the end of the season. According to BBC.com United paid French club Monaco six million pounds for Falcaos services for the remainder of the 2014-15 season. Falcao has scored 11 goals in 20 appearances in Ligue 1 since joining Monaco in May, 2013. The club paid Atletico Madrid a reported 50 million pounds for Falcaos services and signed the striker to a five-year deal. The 28-year-old has been nominated for the FIFA Ballon dOr in each of the past two seasons, finishing fifth in voting in 2012 and 11th in 2013. A severe knee injury cut his 2013-14 season short, limiting the striker to just 17 league games with Monaco. He would still score nine goals in those appearances. The injury would, however, force him out of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, delivering a blow to the chances of the highly-ranked Colombian squad. The team would still advance to the quarter-finals of the tournament behind the strong play of eventual Golden Boot-winner James Rodriguez. Falcao has appeared in 51 internationals for Colombia, scoring 20 career goals. Falcaos career began with Argentinean side River Plate in 2005. He would appear in 90 games with River over the next four seasons before Portuguese club Porto acquired his services for a fee of just under 4 million euros. The Colombian would dominate over parts of the next three seasons with Porto, scoring 41 goals in 51 league matches and 22 in 24 combined games between the UEFA Europa and Champions leagues, highlighted by helping the club win the 2010-11 Europa Championship. In the early stages of the 2011-12 season he would be transferred to Spanish side Atletico Madrid for a reported 40 million euros. His impact with Atletico would be immediate as he would guide Atletico to the 2012 Europa League Championship, leading the competition in scoring for a second straight season. The victory would earn Atletico its third ever berth in the Champions League. Falcao would score 52 goals in 68 league matches and 13 goals in 17 European appearances over parts of two seasons for Ateltico. In addition to the Europa title he would also help them to the 2012-13 Copa del Rey.
